Ireland in the 1980s, five sixteen year old boys, and a futuristic style band, what more could you possibly want from a movie! Sing Street exceeded my expectations. The movie was extremely well written, it was the perfect mix of humor and high school drama. I would say that the movie appeals mostly to a younger crowd. It wasn’t at all a kids movie but I don’t really think my parents would enjoy it as much as I did. Each character has a very complex and well developed backstory that makes the movie mush more real. For example form the two scenes that the main characters sister was in I feel like I know her personally. Although Sing Street has an extremely different plot it remind me a lot of the Netflix movie Dope. If you liked the style of Dope I would highly recommend this movie.
While the writing and directing were very good, what made Sing Street stand out was the music. The movie is about a boy who starts a band just to impress a girl but makes great friends, becomes very close with his older brother, and finds a love for music in the process. He is greatly inspired by Duran Duran, A-ha, and The Cure. The soundtrack has a mix of songs from these bands and some original Sing Street songs that make me feel some type of way. Through music this movie tackles multiple issues like young love, brotherhood, tough family situations, and expresses individuality, and does it beautifully. Sing Street has nominated a few times this award season and while I don’t expect a win I think the movie totally deserves the nominations.
