Sing Street

Ireland in the 1980s, five sixteen year old boys, and a futuristic style band, what more could you possibly want from a movie! Sing Street exceeded my expectations. The movie was extremely well written, it was the perfect mix of humor and high school drama. I would say that the movie appeals mostly to a younger crowd. It wasn’t at all a kids movie but I don’t really think my parents would enjoy it as much as I did. Each character has a very complex and well developed backstory that makes the movie mush more real. For example form the two scenes that the main characters sister was in I feel like I know her personally. Although Sing Street has an extremely different plot it remind me a lot of the Netflix movie Dope. If you liked the style of Dope I would highly recommend this movie. maxresdefault.jpg

While the writing and directing were very good, what made Sing Street stand out was the music. The movie is about a boy who starts a band just to impress a girl but makes great friends, becomes very close with his older brother, and finds a love for music in the process. He is greatly inspired by Duran Duran, A-ha, and The Cure. The soundtrack has a mix of songs from these bands and some original Sing Street songs that make me feel some type of way. Through music this movie tackles multiple issues like young love, brotherhood, tough family situations, and expresses individuality, and does it beautifully. Sing Street has nominated a few times this award season and while I don’t expect a win I think the movie totally deserves the nominations.  15SINGSTREET-facebookJumbo.jpg

Manchester By The Sea

In a word: tragic. When hosting SNL Casey Affleck, the lead actor, said this about Manchester By the Sea.

“It’s an Incredibly depressing picture. It is. It’s really a downer. I mean its great, I’m really proud of it. Please go see it. It is a beautiful testament to what we will do for a family, how every one deserves a second chance, and also how unbearably sad movies can be.”

After that glowing review and the many nominations the movie revived, I deiced that I just had to see it. In the begging of the movie the father of a 16 year old boy and brother of Casey Affleck’s character dies from a type of heart disease (this isn’t a spoiler its the basis of the movie). But from then on it just keeps getting sadder. Casey Affleck pays a janitor who lives outside of Boston with a dark past. This weekend Affleck won a well deserved Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. I would also like to propose a new award to the Hollywood Foreign Press: Best Crying Scene. Michelle Williams can cry like nobody’s business and deserves to be recognized.

I cant say to much about this movie with out spoiling it but Manchester by the Sea was aggressively sad but with some witty dialog and definitely worth seeing.

While this was a very good movie it was one of the worst movie watching experiences i have ever had. There was some witty lines that were worth a laugh or two but all in all it was very sad. The lady sitting next to me DID NOT get that memo! She literally laughed, no cackled the whole entire time. At one point the boy who lost his dad was having a full on panic attack and I swear this lady laughs loudly and goes “awwwww poor kid hahhaha” like we are in her living room! I have no time for people with bad movie theater edict. If you text, if you talk during important parts, and if you LAUGH at Manchester by the Sea I will cut you just saying.

Highlights (and Lowlights)

Out of all the movies I watched this year here are some of the best worst and every thing in between. For a full list of all movies see previous post

Worst movie of 2016: Quitters, Indignation

There are no words for how bad these movies are. Huge waste of money and time.

Most likely to make you cry: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, My Girl

When kids cry, I cry 100% of the time

Most likely to make you laugh: The To-Do List

Aubrey Plaza unbelievably funny and so is the movie 10/10 will make a bad day good

Most thought provoking: Spotlight

I have a few questions for the Catholic Church

Most likely to give you nightmares: Colonia

Real life, real cult, really left me shook

Most likely to make you happy: Hacksaw Ridge

The happiest War movie out there

Most likely to make you feel thankful: Room

Your problems might be bad but at least you weren’t kidnapped and kept in a shed for seven years while raising a son

I really can’t pic a best movie there were so many good ones. The ones I really liked were mentioned in the full list of movies.

Notable Mentions

The Accountant: This movie did not get good reviews but I really consider it one of the best movies I saw all year. Ben Afleck killed it and Anna Kendrick really normalized a movie about people living far from average lives.

Everybody Wants Some!!: This movie have literally no plot at all but honestly I still kinda liked it. College baseball players were cute in the 80s

Bridesmaids: I really thought this movie was going to be about good friends having a great time but these girls are all bitches to each other and I was not expecting it.

Heathers: If anyone tries to tell you that this is the mean girls of the 80s they definitely haven’t seen both movies. Mean girls was a funny movie about high school, in Heather multiple people are murdered!

Bourne Identity and Bourne Legacy: The gun shot to dialogue volume ratio is at least 10 to 1. No questions are answered at the end of the movies, I am still confused.

Zach and Miri Make a Porno: Really good! I was pleasantly surprised about how much I liked this movie. It was very funny and really about making a porno but actually made me cry and that doesn’t happen a lot.

Obvious Child: First of all Jenny Slate is the cutest. This is a movie about an abortion but it was created by a comedian so it is a lot of emotions all in one. I absolutely recommend this movie.

End of the Year, End of the Race

I write this post with a heavy heart. On December 31st 2016 I prepared to ring in the new year after only watching 78 movies, 22 off from my goal. Even though I fell short of my goal its not the end of the world. I spent the year doing what I love and having a great time. I watched some good movies, I watched some great movies, and I watched some horrible movies. At the end of this post I will include the full list of movies I saw in 2016.

Just because the year is over doesn’t mean this blog is also over. Winners never quit so in 2017 I will start fresh and try to watch 100 again. I have learned from my mistakes and I am ready. And I will keep all my fans updated with my reviews of the movies of the year. Stay tuned for a end of the year recap of the best and worst of the year!
